A synthetic rubber manufacturer was having constant seal leakage problems with their SBR agitator seal for the past 5 years. The Flowserve BRO double seal would leak instantly on the outboard seal while the internal seal would leak inside the agitator after approximately 2 months. Customers incurred massive disruptions in their manufacturing process and product loss as a result of this.

The seal was sent to the PSS Seal Service Center for examination and repair. There were clear problems of concentricity and misalignment. PSS replaced the mechanical seal faces and other soft parts. We sent the seal back to the customer with our suggestions to check agitator shaft concentricity.

Customer agreed with our suggestions and asked the PSS Service team to perform the work. As this is a large agitator with a 6 meter shaft, we started by examining the shaft inside the agitator. We also had to install lifting supports for the shaft as the lantern and gear on the top had to be removed.

Next we checked the concentricity at the top flange end of the agitator and found it out of spec at 0.3 mm. It became quite apparent that the lantern gear had to be examined. PSS removed the lantern gear at the site and moved the equipment to PSS workshop for disassembly and inspection. After inspection, we found there were many problems – bent shaft, damaged coupling, and distorted lantern top.

We got customer approval to machine the lantern surface to the right flatness. We straightened the shaft and repaired the coupling. After assembling the unit again, the concentricity was reduced to 0.05 mm, a huge improvement.

We installed the equipment back at the site. Customer has now been operating the equipment for the last 6 months without any problem. There is also no leakage on the external seal. Customer is extremely satisfied with the result and will now be asking to solve all their agitator seal leakage problems on site – there are another 5 units.

ในช่วง 5 ปีที่ผ่านมา ผู้ผลิตยางสังเคราะ ห์รายหนึ่งประสบปัญหาการรั่วของซีล SBR agitator อย่างต่อเนื่อง เนื่องจากแมคคานิคอลซีล รุ่น Double Seal มักจะมีการรั่วที่ Outboard Seal และในขณะเดียวกันหลังการใช้งานประมาณ 2 เดือน Internal Seal ก็มักจะเกิดการรั่วภายในเช่นกัน นี่เป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้กระบวนการผลิตของลูกค้าต้องหยุดชะงัก ทั้งยังส่งผลกระทบต่อระบบการผลิตสินค้าทั้งหมดอีกด้วย

ซีลนี้ถูกส่งมายัง PSS Seal Service Center เพื่อทำการตรวจสอบและซ่อมแซม โดยปัญหาที่เห็นได้ชัดเจนเลยก็คือ Concentricity และ Misalignment
PSS ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ และส่งซีลนี้กลับไปให้ลูกค้าพร้อมคำแนะนำในการตรวจสอบ Agitator Shaft Concentricity.

ลูกค้าเห็นด้วยกับคำแนะนำของเราและขอให้ทีม Service เข้าดำเนินการที่หน้างาน แต่เนื่องจาก Agitator นี้มีเพลาขนาดใหญ่และยาวกว่า 6 เมตร เราจึงต้องเริ่มต้นด้วยการตรวจสอบเพลาภายในถัง Agitator ก่อน นอกจากนี้เรายังดำเนินการติดตั้ง Special Support เพื่อรองรับเพลา เนื่องจากต้องถอด Lantern gear และ Gearbox ด้านบนออก

จากนั้นเราได้ทำการตรวจสอบ Concentricity ที่ตำแหน่งด้านบนของหน้าแปลน ของ Agitator และตรวจพบว่า ค่าที่ตรวจวัดได้เกินกว่ามาตรฐานสูงถึง 0.3 mm. จึงเห็นได้ชัดว่าต้องตรวจสอบ Condition ของ Lantern gear
ทีมงาน service ของเราได้ทำการถอด Lantern gear จากหน้างานและนำมาที่ Workshop ของเราเพื่อทำการถอดแยกชิ้นส่วนและดำเนินการตรวจสอบ โดยหลังจากตรวจสอบในครั้งนี้ เราพบปัญหาอยู่หลายอย่าง ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Shaft Seal มีปัญหาค่า Run out, Coupling เสียหาย และ ผิวโละของ Lantern gear ตำแหน่งด้านบนไม่เรียบ

เราได้รายงานปัญหาที่ตรวจพบและแจ้งแนวทางแก้ไขปัญหาให้กับลูกค้าของเรา และเราได้รับการอนุมัติให้ทำการแก้ไขความเรียบของ Lantern gear ให้ได้ตามมาตรฐานที่กำหนด รวมถึงได้ทำการแก้ไขปัญหา Run out ของ Shaft Seal และซ่อมแซม Coupling หลังจากประกอบชิ้นส่วนที่ผ่านการซ่อมแซมเข้าด้วยกันอีกครั้ง เราได้ดำเนินการตรวจสอบค่า Concentricity พบว่าลดลงเหลือเพียงแค่ 0.05 มม. นี่ถือเป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ชัดเจนอย่างยิ่ง

หลังจากนั้นเราได้ติดตั้งอุปกรณ์กลับไปที่หน้างาน และทำการทดสอบการทำงาน ซึ่งไม่พบปัญหา และในช่วง 6 เดือนที่ผ่านมา ลูกค้าของเราได้ใช้งานอุปกรณ์ได้อย่างดีและไม่พบปัญหาใดๆ อีกทั้งปัญหาการรั่วซึมที่ External Seal ก็หายไปอีกด้วย

จากการดำเนินการในครั้งนี้ทำให้ลูกค้าของเราพึงพอใจกับผลลัพธ์ที่ได้อย่างมาก และยังวางแผนที่จะให้เราช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาการรั่วของ Agitator Seal ในอีก 5 ถังด้วยเช่นกัน

A petrochemical plant in Rayong was facing major problems on their storage tanks with corroded annular plates and resulting damaged concrete base. The corrosion was externally created by environmental conditions like rain and the marine environment in Rayong. Rain water accumulation at the base of tanks was a major contributor to the problem.

Some commonly used solutions in the market (rubber membranes, fiber-mesh reinforced tapes, and joint sealants) give a poor lifetime since the annular plate seal starts deteriorating after only 1 year. The Enecon solution is a major improvement as it comprises primarily 2 products. Enecon Durafill was used to create a high strength composite slope which bonded with the metallic tank shell, annular plate and concrete substrates. Multiple layers of Eneseal HR was used to create a seal on the outside.

The superior properties of Eneseal HR include its elongation of 70% (to compensate for both physical and thermal movements on the tank shell and concrete base), UV resistance, and breathability. The breathability of Eneseal HR gives a huge advantage over conventional seals in the market – it seals against external liquids but will allow internal moisture to escape out through the pores. Internal moisture is very often a major contributor for annular plate corrosion.

5 years ago, the Enecon Thailand team provided this sealing solution on 11 tanks (crude oil, paraxylene, denim water storage tanks) at this customer. Now 5 years later, our customer performed a routine tank inspection on 3 of the tanks after draining the contents. The multi-product solution offered by Enecon Thailand was found to be in good condition in all 3 tanks. The annular plate was also found to be in good condition in 2 of the 3 tanks. For the third tank, corrosion of the annular plate was caused most probably by sulfur content in customer process. Therefore, the solution provided by Enecon Thailand was a major success.
